Back to College!

Back to College, the New Term is almost over, and already the Autumn is here!.The
first Assignment is approaching fast.!We have had our first lecture on Art Therapy, and workshops on same...interesting.
Have begun the research Methodology, and we are deciding on themes for the final thesis.I am torn between the idea of Differation, (students with specific learning needs at both ends of the spectrum) and colour blindness, which is very common among boys ?.
We had our first inspection in School last week and I am completely jaded after that.Looking forward to some fresh air over the break, having a lie in (or should that be lye on )in bed, and getting up to date with the washing!.
We have a new addition to the family, in the form of an eight week old boxer puppy called "Lilah," so Roxy has a little sister to keep her company!.

I would like to be a dot in a painting by Miro.

Barely distinguishable from other dots,
it's true, but quite uniquely placed.
And from my dark centre

I'd survey the beauty of the linescape
and wonder -- would it be worthwhile
to roll myself towards the lemon stripe,

Centrally poised, and push my curves
against its edge, to give myself
a little attention?

But it's fine where I am.
I'll never make out what's going on
around me, and that's the joy of it.

The fact that I'm not a perfect circle
makes me more interesting in this world.
People will stare forever --

Even the most unemotional get excited.
So here I am, on the edge of animation,
a dream, a dance,a fantastic construction,

A child's adventure.
And nothing in this tawny sky
can get too close, or move too far away."

Last post.

Hey fellow bloggers, last post of the year, can you believe it?...Dont know where the time went...Steepest learning curve I have been on in a while.A few more days and the first year is over.Exhausted, have to summon up the strength to get me thru the next few weeks. looking forward to a good eight hours sleep, esp,on Sat mornings, clean clothes, sorting out the house again and loads and loads of TEA.
It has been a great year tho, learned to type, format, save stuff, use the digital camera and up load photos to blog.created a blog, with links to sites.Googled for Ireland..which I thoroughly enjoyed.Made my own stop gap animation and figured out how to post it to the blog. Researched and Typed my first Assignments (in over 25 yrs...Holy God that WAS scary).Used a mac for the first time and used photos Id taken to do photoshop.Buried my dear old dad in the middle of it all, know he is looking over me and proud as hell...because he would be, and mam too.
Two assignments to go.Come on Ger, get into gear..calling on all reserves of energy here to get me to the finish line...but first, thnk I 'll "have a quick one, in my hand, while I'm standing....

Pushing through!

These daffs have been pushing through for months now.All that effort and energy focused on yellow trumphets that herald in Summer, for a few glorious days and are gone, until next year. The last few months have felt like that, hanging in there, washing( packed to overflowing!)tired, anxious and weepy.Missing the people in my life who have gone...too soon.Assignment two made it through the printer mishaps, curses, frustrations, spelling mistakes, knackered nights, and finally the printer shuddered out the last glorious glistening page with a full stop at end of it.!!!Pulling myself through the days, four more to Easter break...hurraaaaagh!

3d Junior Cert

One of the themes for this years J.Cert is "out and About".This student has made a model of the tree and bond in his back garden. The whole piece is constructed entirely from paper mache, corrugated card, masking tape, tissue, other card including an empty roll of tape and p.v.a. glue.He used acrylics to paint it when it was dry.

3d work for "Pres"

One of the options on the Leaving cert craft work is clay modelling. The theme for this one is "fallen angel".It was constructed in florists wire , and modelled over in newclay.Clay was extruded for the hair, and folds of fabric made with small coils. The detail on the wing was added with netting from a bag of oranges.! It gives great detail.

Offset prints

This was the first set, stronger colours, fades as you make each print. If you really want to test your patience, cover the tables with papers,( then the kids) .Get a load of oranges, lemons, cabbage and spuds cut into chunks(no not cookery class!), corrugated cardboard, hessian , lego, bits of stick, card toys etc, and get the kids to make prints with them. When they are dry you can cut up the prints and make assembleges and pictures with them...dump all the mess in newspapers you have covering the tables.Use the different textures to suggest textures for grass, sky etc.Great fun, but patience needed for the clean up afterwards.!

offset printing

About to begin printing in school this week and came across these off set prints from a workshop 2 yrs ago.Easy to do.The theme of these was "ladders and seaweed".Assemble found materials (Ink up each item) and place on clean paper , put a damp sheet of paper on top, wet side facing the inked up items.cover and run through the roller.String, polystyrene, cut up embossed wallpaper all work well, as the ink really picks up the texture.

u tube, flickr, pod casting Library of Congress and all that!

Utube, flicr, pod casting...this whole web thing continues to blow me away!.Spent the morning learning about it all in Colins class, then trying to apply it on the blog site.Colin makes it all look so easy, a tap here ,an application there, and an hour laterI am wondering where it has all gone to ?, and will it re-appear on the blog.!Still tipping away ,trying to get my head around the mac,so much to take in , so little time! Still, I can see how you could get lost in it, and the possibilities are endless!

Pinch Pot White Stoneware,Slip and oxides

Sarah Ryan gave demonstrations at N.C.A.D. from time to time. She made Pinch pots look so easy and inspired me .Her work was incredible, surfaces , textures, pure magic.I treasure this piece by her.Sarah used stoneware and white earthenware.Sometimes she sponged on colour before pinching out the shape. Then again she often applied texture with fine pins to the finished piece. Her turquoise pieces and masks based on the chapel (Rock of Cashel)were great.

Ceramics from Degree Show, Ger

Two pots constructed in craft crank, oxide inlays.Nature inspired.
Hand built using coiling techniques.Shaped using scraper.Fired to stoneware temps. This is some of my own work.I also made larger pieces (ovoid forms)which were pushed into shape from the inside, using scrapers and my grandmothers butterpats!!.Brilliant for building with.

Close up of beech tree

You can find sources to work from absolutely everywhere.I tend to work from Nature.(Natural Form).Use a camera to capture images, draw from these, using a viewfinder to select areas of most interest. You have colour, texture, form, line and pattern at work. Its a good idea to make collections of pod, seed, shells, found objects to work from. There are great Ceramicists such as Magdalena Odundo, Monica Young, and Jennifer Lee to mention a few, who were all inspired by nature..

Print taken from image of the "Creation of Adam", Sistine Chapel.Saw this for real two yrs ago
in theSistine Chapel.. and the idea of Michelangelo, lying on the flat of his back painting away just hit me!.Theres an energy between the pointed finger of God the father , and Adam languishing away there, half dosing.I chose it as an inspiration to the lads, anything is possible, if you work hard, believe in yourself, and have pride in your work.!
It is often difficult to know what to do with large groups such as Transition years. Here is a selection of this terms work-in -progress.
The lads chose their own theme. Some hadnt done art since first year.We undercoated some breadboards in white emulsion. When dry, we drew up the images, lightly and painted in areas of colour using acrylics.(Acetate cut into A4 sheets make great palettes and are inexpensive to buy.)You can work on the boards either portrait or landscape, depending on the image you are going to paint. It may take several coats to get a strong even colour.
I used to make puppets with Junior groups , but changed to constructed 3d pieces this year and found it worked much better. Will post some of them shortly.
Rod and string puppets.Built up on a cross frame using padding.Painted, dressed and varnished .Picture hooks were put into the back of the hands,or wire controls added at wrist.Strong clear fishing gutta was threaded through the picture hooks and connected to a "control"cross shaped piece of wood on top.Once secured, you can begin moving the puppets with these controls.Fabric books are a great way to get samples eg.(clothes on the King).Spray paint kids shoes, rope for braiding, piping, tubing, any fabric to get effects.Old Halloween wigs and fabric for kids soft toys are great for hair.Clothes cut down make good costumes.eg.wiastcoats, ties, dressing gowns ,dresses, blouses, shirts etc.
I am a big fan of the "Matrix", and a friend of mine gave me the poster of Morphius.
Wow, what a poster...I love it.Have it on the back wall of the Art Room and it just gives me a lift every time I see it.Colour charts , tonal charts and a big poster from "Form and Fusion"(Coca Cola). This dominates the wall and must be replaced, soon.!
